As court artist to King François I of France, Bourdichon produced paintings, books and even parade floats for the sovereign and his entourage. Child and Nation. A Study of Political Socialisation and Banal Nationalism in France and England
Where do feelings of national belonging come from ? Why is it that this belonging often seems both fundamental and banal, both intangible and omnipresent ? This book argues that the answers to these questions lie in childhood and the socialisation to the nation that we experience as children. It suggests that the banality of our own everyday nationalism is due to the fact that we have spent our lives learning to take it for granted. Just as our first understandings of reality are learned during childhood socialisation, so nationhood and national belonging are internalised as natural and necessary from the very beginning of our lives. The specific nature of this early socialisation is what confers upon banal nationalism its characteristic combination of omnipresence, inscrutability and self-evidence. To try and get around this self-evidence and explore this socialisation and its results, this study has adopted an innovative methodology involving semi-directive projective interviews with young children in France and England. This book presents an analysis of how this early socialisation to the nation plays out on young children's visions of national belonging and its justifications and implications. It also looks at what this transmission in childhood means for nationalism as an ideology and the power and pertinence of the nation today.

En 2012, l'artiste américain Jared Bark, s'est mis à empiler des livres dans les champs et les bois autour de sa ferme. Il avait cette image en tête d'une colonne de livres dressée au bord d'un champ entouré d'arbres. Après avoir travaillé sur les piles en extérieur, Jared Bark a déplacé le projet dans son atelier, où il a fabriqué toutes sortes de piles de livres : des colorées, des brulées, des effacées...Plus récemment, Bark a construit des piles verticales de livres qui sont ensuite passées dans une scierie pour devenir une "cant", terme désignant une bûche qui a été fraisée sur les quatre côtés. La verticalité élancée de ces sculptures fait référence à la fois aux arbres dont on fait le papier et aux anciennes colonnes autoportantes que Bark a découvertes à Pompéi. Book of Stacks, Stacks of Books rassemble pour la première fois dans un livre une sélection complète des piles que Bark a réalisées au cours de la dernière décennie.

Pas de doute, Greta est prête à régner sur le monde aux côtés de Talis, la plus vieille et la plus sage des intelligences artificielles.
Mais le processus qui l'a transformée est aussi en train de la tuer. Car les changements qu'elle a subis dévorent son enveloppe mortelle à un rythme effréné. Lorsque son corps lâchera prise, Greta devra prendre possession de l'un de ceux qui la servent désormais, les Cygnes, des hommes et des femmes moitié soldats, moitié prêtres, tous loyaux jusqu'au sacrifice. Mais avant, elle doit trouver un moyen d'éviter la folie qui s'empare peu à peu d'elle.
D'autant que le sort de la jeune fille a poussé son royaume à la révolte. Alors qu'elle traverse en compagnie de Talis et deux de ses serviteurs les paysages étranges et inquiétants du Saskatchewan, Greta se retrouve vite la cible de rebelles bien décidés, à défaut de parvenir à la libérer, à lui ôter la vie. Parmi eux, Elian, le garçon à qui elle a évité la mort, et qui brûle de changer le monde, à la pointe de l'épée si nécessaire. Au point que même la loyauté légendaire des mythiques Cygnes pourrait bien être mise à rude épreuve…

Acacia thorn in my heart
I started writing "Acacia thorn in my heart" after reading the book of a white South African woman about her childhood in the same region as mine but relating a completely different experience. She had maids, her father drove her to school and she played with real toys. I lived in the heart of the country, away from everything and had to walk five miles to go to school. I was born in Natal. My father rented a plot of land from a white owner to do market gardening. Although Indian families tended not to educate daughters, our parents decided that education was a priority for us. Despite financial difficulties, they were able to send us to school. We had to get up at five o'clock in order to catch the school train. In winter, as we were scantily clad, we shivered all the way to the station.
