PIONEERS OF REPRESENTATION THEORY: FROBENIUS, BURNSIDE, SCHUR, AND BRAUER
The year 1897 was marked by two important mathematical events: the publication of the first paper on representations of finite groups by Ferdinand Georg Frobenius ( 1849-1917) and the appearance of the first treatise in English on the theory of finite groups by William Burnside (1852-1927). Burnside soon developed his own approach to representations of finite groups. In the next few years, working independently, Frobenius and Burnside explored the new subject and its applications to finite group theory.
They were soon joined in this enterprise by Issai Schur (1875-194 1) and some years later, by Richard Brauer (1901-1977). These mathematicians' pioneering research is the subject of this book. It presents an account of the early history of representation theory through an analysis of the published work of the principals and others with whom the principals' work was interwoven. Also included are biographical sketches and enough mathematics to enable readers to follow the development of the subject. An introductory chapter contains some of the results involving characters of finite abelian groups by Lagrange, Gauss, and Dirichlet, which were part of the mathematical tradition from which Frobenius drew his inspiration.
This book presents the early history of an active branch of mathematics. It includes enough detail to enable readers to learn the mathematics along with the history. The volume would be a suitable text for a course on representations of finite groups, particularly one emphasizing an historical point of view.

Grâce à Narramus - Pêcheur de couleurs CP-CE1 à comprendre et raconter une histoire, compétences essentielles pour une entrée réussie en lecture et en production d'écrits en élémentaire. La réussite des élèves en lecture dépend grandement de leurs compétences initiales en compréhension de textes entendus. De même, leurs performances en production d'écrits sont nettement meilleures lorsqu'ils ont appris au préalable à élaborer un discours décontextualisé. Narramus - Pécheur de couleurs est composé de trois éléments : 1- L'ALBUM Pécheur de couleurs (version souple) Issu de la littérature de jeunesse, Pêcheur de couleurs est un album de Michel Piquemal et Eric Battut (illus.), édité par Didier jeunesse. Dandine est heureuse dans son pré, l'herbe y est douce et sucrée, si belle, si verte. Lorsqu'elle voit passer le train, elle voudrait bien partir au loin pour voir d'autres pays. La voilà partie avec son ami Martin le pêcheur de couleur à la découverte du monde. Leur voyage est une invitation à découvrir les couleurs, le dehors, la joie de ressentir et de rêver... 2. LE GUIDE PEDAGOGIQUE Narramus - Pêcheur de couleurs Il est constitué de deux parties : - la présentation générale incluant une analyse des fondements théoriques, - le scénario regroupant les fiches de préparation des huit modules. Chaque module est présenté sur une double page : - A gauche, une description des différentes étapes à suivre, des tâches à réaliser, des consignes à donner avec des propositions d'énoncés pour l'enseignant et des réponses attendues des élèves. - A droite, des commentaires de différents types : conseil pratique, justification d'une option didactique inhabituelle, explicitation de la théorie sous-jacente à l'une des propositions des auteurs. Pour les rédiger, les auteurs ont recensé les questions posées par les enseignants qui ont testé les différents prototypes. Ils y relaient aussi les observations, les témoignages ou les conseils des enseignants-concepteurs. 3. LES RESSOURCES NUMERIQUES Narramus - Pêcheur de couleurs Elles contiennent tous les supports utiles pour la mise en oeuvre des modules (textes, illustrations, animations, version audio de l'histoire...) à utiliser avec un vidéoprojecteur. Le numérique est un outil précieux lorsque l'on veut centrer et maintenir l'attention conjointe des jeunes enfants sur un point précis, au moment où on l'évoque, ce que ne permet pas un album qui circule. Les enseignants-concepteurs sont unanimes pour considérer que le numérique apporte une véritable plus-value à beaucoup d'activités. Certains en font cependant un usage moins systématique que celui proposé. A vous d'expérimenter ! Grâce aux ressources numériques de Narramus, vous pouvez : présenter le texte sans l'illustration ou l'inverse, montrer toutes les illustrations d'un même épisode sur une même diapositive, faire disparaitre des informations ou en ajouter, faire écouter un épisode de l'histoire, multiplier les feed-back pour étudier et mémoriser le vocabulaire... Il est possible d'exporter les fichiers audio au format mp3 sur votre ordinateur pour les mettre à disposition des élèves au coin bibliothèque (gravés sur un CD audio ou enregistrés sur une clé USB). En suivant la démarche Narramus - Pêcheur de couleurs, vos élèves apprendront à : mémoriser le vocabulaire, acquérir de nouvelles tournures syntaxiques, retenir les idées principales de l'histoire, s'interroger sur les pensées des personnages, comprendre l'implicite du récit ! Mise en place de la démarche Narramus - Pêcheur de couleurs Le scénario contient 8 modules, répartis sur 4 semaines. Un module n'est pas nécessairement réalisé en une fois : vous êtes libre de le découper en autant de parties que vous le jugez nécessaire. Il peut ainsi se dérouler sur une journée, comme deux ou trois, selon ce qui fonctionne le mieux pour votre classe. Comme vous le verrez dans le guide pédagogique, les enseignants concepteurs de Narramus font souvent un module sur une journée, en le divisant en deux temps (un le matin, un en fin de journée).
