Depuis plusieurs années, un nombre croissant de fictions occidentales se focalisent sur la figure archétypale du serial killer. Incarnation du mal absolu à la psyché malade, monstre d'intelligence perverse et incontrôlable, être tout à la fois en prise à un sadisme hors norme et à un masochisme affectif d'égale intensité, cette figure du mal est instrumentalisée dans la culture de masse pour laquelle elle représente une conception fortement anxiogène de la mort, de la souffrance, de la terreur. Pourtant, cette figure symptomatique de l'époque est contournée : ses pensées et ses actes sont évoqués de manière hyperbolique, sensationnelle, fictionnelle. Ce n'est pas le cas dans Je tue donc je suis. Voici, pour la première fois, une incursion authentique ("cash", dirait-on) dans l'esprit des hommes qui incarnent le mal absolu. Dessins, témoignages, écrits, rassemblés et présentés avec rigueur et précision, à plusieurs années-lumière de leur représentation fictive : totalement réelle...

The Undergrowth of Science. Delusion, self-deception and human frailty
Walter Gratzer's themes in the stories he relates in The Undergrowth of Science are collective delusion and human folly. Science is generally seen as a process bound by rigorous rules, which its practitioners must not transgress. Deliberate fraud occasionally intrudes, but it is soon detected, the perpetrators cast out and the course of discovery barely disturbed. Far more interesting are the outbreaks of self-delusion that from time to time afflict upright and competent researchers, and then spread like an epidemic or mass-hysteria through a sober and respectable scientific community. When this happens the rules by which scientists normally govern their working lives are suddenly suspended. Sometimes these episodes are provoked by personal vanity, an unwillingness to acknowledge error or even contemplate the possibility that a hard-won success is a will o' the wisp; at other times they stem from loyalty to a respected and trusted guru, or even from patriotic pride; and, worst of ail, they may be a consequence of a political ideology which imposes its own interpretation on scientists' observations of the natural world. Unreason and credulity supervene, illusory phenomena are described and measured, and theories are developed to explain them - until suddenly, often for no single reason, the bubble bursts, leaving behind it a residue of acrimony, recrimination, embarrassment and ruined reputations.
Here, then, are radiations, measured with high precision yet existing only in the minds of those who observed them; the Russian water, which some thought might congeal the oceans: phantom diseases which called for heroic surgery; monkey testis implants that restored the sexual powers of ageing roués and of tired sheep; truths about genetics and about the nature of matter, perceptible only to Aryan scientists in the Third Reich or Marxist ideologues in the Soviet Union; and much more. The Undergrowth of Science explores, in terms accessible to the lay reader, the history of such episodes, up to our own time, in ail their absurdity, tragedy and pathos.

Epilepsy: the invisible pain
They say life is a long stretch of a calm river, but not for everyone ! She was for me until the day when everything rocked, the day my destiny was changed dramatically. People do not realize how life can be so sweet and so beautiful. They complain all day long for trivialities. They are not even aware that they have before their eyes the most beautiful wealth : the luck and happiness of living in good health. I was rich before. Now I am poor because my child has an incurable disease, that has currently no hope of being healed. As a parent, how can we accept that ? , How to continue living carrying the bundle of pain in my head ? , How to overcome this feeling of helplessness ? When I started speaking to my heart, I didn't know myself that this was the beginning of a new life : a rebirth as a poet. When I learnt that my 7-year-old daughter was suffering from the Dravet Syndrome, a rare genetic epileptic encephalopathy, this was like an earthquake in my life. Then, I needed to write in order to express my sorrow and my pain. Words and rhymes came naturally to my mind. This was obvious that poetry would be my survival weapon.

Le théâtre de la Terre. Inside suivi de Moving Earths
Moving Earths et Inside constituent les deux premiers volets de la trilogie du Théâtre de la Terre, une série de trois pièces de théâtre coécrites par Frédérique Aït-Touati et Bruno Latour. L'ensemble de cette trilogie poursuit un objectif commun, celui de remettre en question nos idées reçues concernant la planète, cette Terre que nous habitons comme nous marchons dessus, presque sans y penser. Inside propose une expérience de pensée, et invite le lecteur à se tenir non pas sur le Globe, mais dans cette " zone critique " dont parlent les scientifiques. Pour tenter de comprendre ce que signifie " vivre dedans ", cette pièce de théâtre propose une série de tests en combinant les outils de la modélisation et de la simulation, soit deux manières de se rendre sensibles : par la science et par la scène. Entre philosophie et théâtre, Moving Earths invite le lecteur à tester l'hypothèse d'un parallèle entre l'époque de la révolution astronomique et la nôtre. Sommes-nous également en train de vivre une transformation du monde aussi profonde et radicale que celle de l'époque de Galilée ? Une chose est sûre : nous ne savons plus exactement sur quelle planète nous vivons, ni comment la décrire. Dans cette pièce, Frédérique Aït-Touati et Bruno Latour s'inspirent du travail de recherche de l'environnementaliste anglais James Lovelock et de la biologiste américaine Lynn Margulis pour présenter une nouvelle conception de la planète Terre. Ces deux pièces ont été créées au Théâtre Nanterre Amandiers en novembre 2016 et décembre 2019, et ont été jouées sur de nombreuses scènes européennes (Théâtre de l'Odéon à Paris, Martin Gropius Bau à Berlin, Théâtre Benno-Besson en Suisse, ou à la Biennale de Taipei). Deux entretiens avec les auteurs complèteront les textes. L'ouvrage sera richement illustré, et la mise en page rejouera la mise en scène des textes dans l'espace du livre.

B.t.k.. le sérial killer de Wichita
En 1974, un tueur sème la terreur dans la paisible ville de Wichita au Kansas. Il sévit pendant trente ans où il assassine hommes, femmes et enfants par strangulation, pendaison, revolver ou à l'arme blanche. Il frappe à toute heure de la journée dans des quartiers résidentiels et il positionne ses victimes avec des mises en scène macabres. Friand de publicité, il se plaint lorsque les médias ne parlent plus de lui par des courriers, colis, poèmes ou envois qu'il adresse aux enquêteurs, journaux et chaînes de télévision qu'il signe des initiales B. T. K. (Bind, Torture and Kill pour ligoter, torturer et tuer) ou du pseudonyme "Bill Thomas Killman" . Après des années de silence, BTK se manifeste à nouveau en 2004 lorsque le quotidien local sort un dossier sur les trente années du premier crime du mystérieux assassin avec le massacre des quatre membres de la famille Otero. Piégé par les policiers, Dennis Rader est identifié et arrêté. Mari attentionné et bon père de famille, il se préparait à repasser à l'acte après treize années d'abstinence. Pour retracer cette enquête hors normes, Stéphane Bourgoin a eu accès aux interrogatoires de Dennis Rader, à ses courriers et aux selfies où BTK "revit" ses crimes, revêtu d'une perruque avec les vêtements et objets volés à ses victimes, afin d'alimenter ses fantasmes pendant les périodes de temps où il ne tue pas.

Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940), hitherto consigned to a footnote in musical history as Stravinsky's piano teacher, is undergoing rediscovery. A double graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, she emerged as a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition. She was associated with some of the great musicians of her day, including Balakirev and Auer. She performed in both Germany and the UK in the 1900s, but her career petered out after 1920. Songs of Love was first published in 1904. No evidence survives of any public performance in Kashperova's lifetime although it is very likely that they were performed at her regular 'musical evenings at home on Tuesdays' mentioned in her Memoirs. The transparency of the piano writing strongly suggests that she would accompany herself singing. Kashperova, by all accounts, possessed a fine voice, and in the summer of 1906 she decided 'to learn from the artistry', as she put it, of the tenor Raimond von Zur-Mühlen who was widely celebrated for having developed (with Clara Schumann) the Lieder-Abend tradition. His summer-schools on the Baltic coast were frequented by aspiring singers from all over Europe, even Japan and India. Kashperova herself was responsible for the poetic lyrics of Songs of Love (in both Russian and German), which may well have emerged from her own bittersweet experience of life and love ; she was not to marry until 1916 at the age of forty-four. That Kashperova is the author of both the music and the lyrics of Songs of Love would suggest that they express very personal sentiments. Instrumentation : soprano (tenor) and piano

Les vies de Lee Miller
D'abord modèle, découverte à New York par Condé Nast et cover girl pour Vogue, c'est ensuite en 1929, pendant ses années parisiennes aux côtés de Picasso, Cocteau, Eluard et surtout Man Ray qu'elle accède à la notoriété en tant qu'artiste et photographe. On la retrouve une dizaine d'années plus tard, correspondante pour Vogue et Life, documentant les horreurs de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Une photo d'elle prenant un bain dans la baignoire d'Hitler à Munich fait alors le tour du monde. Dans cet ouvrage enfin réédité, Antony Penrose, le fils de Lee Miller, nous fait le récit de ces nombreuses vies passées devant et derrière l'objectif.

Jeffrey DAHMER. Serial Killers #7
"J'ai tué mes victimes pour les garder auprès de moi, car je ne voulais pas rester seul. J'avais alors un sentiment intense de la fragilité de la vie. Quelques instants auparavant, c'était des hommes, et maintenant, ce n'était plus qu'un tas d'os. J'ai éprouvé des remords après chacun de mes crimes, mais cela ne durait jamais longtemps". Le rêve de Jeffrey Dahmer est de créer des esclaves sexuels, d'authentiques zombies, par l'injection d'acide dans le crâne de ses victimes encore vivantes. Son appartement de Milwaukee est transformé en abattoir, avec des restes démembrés, des crânes peints, un squelette accroché dans la douche, des têtes coupées dans le Frigidaire et des morceaux de cadavres dans le congélateur. Le cauchemar de toute une communauté se termine le 24 juillet 1991, après une longue série de dix-sept victimes masculines assassinées, puis violées et démembrées sur une période de treize ans. Dans cette affaire médiatisée par le succès planétaire de la série Netflix de Ryan Murphy, les meurtres de Dahmer ont mis en lumière la faillite des autorités vis-à-vis des multiples disparitions au sein des communautés noire et gay dans ce quartier défavorisé de Milwaukee. Car le procès de Dahmer est aussi celui de tout un système. Cette nouvelle édition revue et augmentée par rapport aux versions parues en 1993 et 1999 est enrichie par de nombreux témoignages inédits de protagonistes de l'affaire et la retranscription des interrogatoires du "Cannibale de Milwaukee" .

L'essentiel d'Alice Miller
En avril 2010, la grande psychanalyste Alice Miller quittait ce monde, laissant derrière elle une oeuvre considérable - et des milliers de lecteurs orphelins, qu'elle avait sa vie durant accompagnés et soutenus. Paradoxalement, cette " brillante avocate de l'enfance saccagée " parlait peu de son propre passé. Et pourtant, son enfance en Pologne, où elle naît en 1923 et grandit tant bien que mal entre le carcan familial et les désastres de la guerre, ne contribua pas peu à la naissance de sa vocation. Installée en Suisse pour ses études, elle passe un doctorat de philosophie, enseigne quelques années puis exerce la profession de psychanalyste jusqu'en 1980. Elle s'éloigne alors progressivement de la psychanalyse traditionnelle qui, à ses yeux, occulte la réalité de la souffrance infantile. C'est là en effet le combat de sa vie - comme thérapeuthe et comme théoricienne : repérer, comprendre, soigner et prévenir les séquelles des mauvais traitements infligés aux enfants par leurs parents. S'appuyant sur son expérience personnelle, sur des exemples historiques ou littéraires fameux (Hitler. Staline, Dostoïevski, Tchekhov. Proust...), nais aussi sur des milliers de témoignages recueillis sur la toile, elle n'a cessé de dénoncer la " pédagogie noire ", qui justifie hypocritement la violence éducative au nom du bien de l'enfant. Violent ou sournois, tout sévice laisse des traces indélébiles, voire aboutit aux pires catastrophes de l'histoire. Ce sont ces thèses, tout comme son engagement public, qui ont fait la notoriété internationale d'Alice Miller et consacrent ses ouvrages comme d'importantes références. Cette édition regroupe ses quatre titres les plus célèbres : C'est pour ton bien (1985), L'Enfant sous terreur (1986) ; La Connaissance interdite (1990) et Notre corps ne ment jamais (2004). L'ensemble, qui constitue à la fois une introduction générale à son oeuvre et un parcours à travers l'évolution de sa pensée, s'accompagne d'une préface inédite de son fils Martin, lui-même psychothérapeute.

CRASH IN BAYEUX - The Last Flight of Sergeant Ferguson
Normandy, France, January 15, 1943. The weather is clear, the sun is shining. Two Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft fly over the Bayeux-Caen railroad. The target is a German freight train - and its locomotive. Aboard the first Spitfire, Sergeant Ferguson is aligning his gun sights on the target. It is 02 : 30 p. m. This will be his very last flight... HARASSING THE OCCUPYING FORCES TO PREPARE THE INVASION The RAF and RCAF had been flying hundreds of similar sorties over France for months, in order to weaken the German forces, particularly the Luftwaffe. The pilots of No. 401 Squadron were among those who took part in this patient work, made up of constant patrols and attacks. Among the 63 men mentioned in this book, 25 were killed in action between 1942 and 1944. A CRASH THAT AWOKE THE SPIRIT OF RESISTANCE Touched by William Ferguson's sacrifice, some French citizens decided to bury the young Canadian flier with dignity, honour and respect. The Germans took this as a provocation. A few weeks later, the Sipo-SD (the "Gestapo") arrested a dozen of them. They were sent to concentration camps - some of them later died in Büchenwald, Dachau and Mauthausen. Others did survive, including Paul Le Caër. In our age, there is the need for traditional wisdoms to retain their validity and be intrinsic to our philosophic and scientific perceptions of the cosmos. We cannot do without their knowledge, their spiritual perspective, and their deep faith in the harmony of all nature. Ignoring these qualities has profound environmental implications. Global warming, environmental pollution, and the exhaustion of nature's resources are but a few of the symptoms of the nature's experiences as we continue to mistreat it in order to satisfy our own ends. This work helps us to realise that wherever we are, we are a part of nature. All the things around us are as presences, representing forces and powers of life that are not ours and yet are all part of us.
