Le dernier livre de Collier Schorr, 8 Women, présente des travaux qui s'étendent du milieu des années 90 à nos jours. Les premières oeuvres de Schorr ont utilisé des publicités appropriées de magazines de mode pour aborder les questions de paternité et de désir ; les travaux ont introduit un regard féminin dans le débat sur la représentation féminine. L'appropriation a été le premier médium de Schorr et dans un certain sens, elle y revient, prenant ses propres images de mode commandées et les repliant dans un dialogue avec d'autres oeuvres. Les oeuvres de 8 Women proposent une variété de sujets, tous impliqués dans la performance, que ce soit en tant qu'artistes, mannequins ou musiciens. Schorr, qui travaille dans la mode depuis 10 ans, a créé des décors qui faisaient aussi office d'atelier, révélant des images qui ne pouvaient être faites qu'avec un sujet qui pouvait voyager entre l'objet du désir et le garant d'une identité conçue dans ce moment précis. Travaillant entre les sorties et les manipulations de feuilles lacrymales, Schorr se demande qui sont les femmes qui souhaitent être regardées, ainsi que quel pouvoir existe en reconnaissant cela comme une position post-féministe.

The Gregory Gift
Presenting for the first time the Alexis Gregory Gift to The Frick Collection, this exquisite publication provides illuminating insights into Gregory's magnificently eclectic collection, cataloging his fine and decorative works of art in detail. Twenty-eight works of art bequeathed to the Frick by Alexis Gregory range from Limoges enamels to Saint-Porchaire ware to pastels by the Venetian painter Rosalba Carriera. This remarkable gift has introduced new types of objects to the Frick : works in ivory and rhinoceros horn are the first of their kind to be held in the collection. Gregory's gift includes fifteen Limoges enamels, one of them produced in the workshop of Suzanne de Court, the only woman known to have led an enamel workshop in Limoges. Also part of the gift are a gilt-bronze sculpture, an ivory hilt, a pomander, ewers, saltcellars, and two clocks. Many of Gregory's objects came from such prestigious owners as the French royal collections and the Rothschilds. Included in the publication are commentaries on each gift. This lavishly illustrated publication accompanies an exhibition that will be on view at The Frick Collection February 16 through May 14, 2023.

"Je suis à la recherche du beau dans la douleur". La nuit est son univers poétique favori. Alisa Resnik explique que sa poésie, elle "la trouve plutôt la nuit" . C'est à ce moment-là, qu'elle photogra- phie inlassablement, que ce soit à Berlin, sa ville d'adoption, ou à Saint-Pétersbourg où elle est née. L'artiste russe, née en 1976, photographie un peu comme elle respire : en couleur. Parce que ça l'aide à "décrire l'atmosphère [qu'elle] recherche" , les émotions de la ville et ses lieux de passage, les cafés, les rues, mais aussi des hommes, des femmes, seuls ou enlacés, qui semblent égarés. Strange Adventures examines portrayals of womanhood in the works of prize-winning French author Pierrette Fleutiaux. Fleutiaux's refreshing pictures of womanhood offer insights into how women can become more whole, substantial and free in themselves and in their relationships, as well as how they can contribute to the external world through their creativity and leadership. The study demonstrates how Fleutiaux's heroines navigate the external, bodily and inner situations of adolescence, early adult life, marriage, motherhood, maturity, leadership and death, in the process developing greater inner resources of wisdom, compassion and resilience. This volume considers selections from Fleutiaux's oeuvre, from her first short fiction Histoire de la chauve-souris to her recent Loli le temps venu, including Métamorphoses de la reine (Goncourt de la nouvelle) and Nous sommes éternels (Prix Femina). Using a theoretical framework which draws on Jungian concepts and the philosophy of Simone de Beauvoir, the study analyses women's individuation trajectories at each stage of life. Throughout, Fleutiaux's depictions are shown to pose a challenge to existing conceptions of womanhood and individuality, thus opening up new understandings of what it means to be a woman, and to be human.

Europe's Role in a South African Methodology
This work consists of essays on the so-called Middle Ages, seen from two perspectives. Writing from a sideline perspective, as opposed to the perspectives of historically mainstream theologies, in the first part of the book the author proposes a method for reading religious political texts with European philosophical insights but with a relevance for South Africa. This is done by comparing so-called Medieval texts with South African texts and situations within the demands of liberation, contextualisation, and communalism.In the second part of the book, from a female perspective, the author reevaluates the post-Biblical history of Christianity, criticising the terms "Patristics" and "Middle Ages". A South African women's theology is then offered as the outcome of the sideline perspective on the Bible, history and theology discussed in this book.

The German Effect on D.H. Lawrence and his Works 1885-1912
This study analyzes in depth the German effect upon D.H. Lawrence and his works from his birth in 1885 to his departure from England in 1912. German literary, philosophical and musical works had considerable impact on Lawrence's formation as an artist. They also influenced the creation of his own literary theory, entering his life concurrently with the three problems of class, woman and religion, which evolved into his major literary themes. The German effect is thus demonstrated to be the confirmation of Lawrence's strong tendency toward subjectivism in literary art : it strengthened his conviction that his art set him apart from all classes of society ; it encouraged the development of his view of women as the sexual, not the maternal, mediatrix to art ; and it fortified his denial of traditional Christianity and assisted his creation of his personal vitalistic creed.

A multitude of Sins. Richard Ford
A sequel to Rock Springs and Women with Men, the collection of short stories entitled A Multitude of Sins was published in 2001 and immediately achieved worldwide recognition. If this series of ten short stories seems to feature adultery, it would be a major mistake to believe that the stories can be reduced to what is actually a side issue or a pretext to something else, sometimes of much greater importance. As often with great writers, Richard Ford tackles several other topics along with the sin of unfaithfulness which is a base camp from which to go further up into the knowledge of human deficiency, lack and want. Pondering these sins, Richard Ford lays them all bare while often unveiling the issue of the story right from the beginning, instead of cautiously preserving it as a last chance literary trick to pull it off at the fast moment. Showing insight through observation, his writing is deceptive in as much as it seems natural and easygoing when it requires close analysis and several successive readings to yield up its literary and humane secrets. The comparison some critics have made to Chekhov is not overblown and Agregation students, certainly among the most perceptive readers in the world, should naturally enjoy both reading and studying A Multitude of Sins, pleasure and scholarship being complementary, not antagonistic. The exclusive interview of Richard Ford at the end of the book will certainly be appreciated by Agregation students, who will thus be able to finish off their knowledge of Ford's works.

Focusing on complex lived experiences that have emerged froma gender-conscious reading of the sources, the contributions illustrate how migration led women to take on roles of responsibility, or to follow their husbands in their careers as artists, traders and businessmen. There also emerges a widespread literacy that is combined with practical skills andknowledge marked by biological, legal and religious preconceptions : features that permeated the communities studied, where ties of family, religion and patronage prevail upon the dichotomy of public sphere/private sphere.

Acacia thorn in my heart
I started writing "Acacia thorn in my heart" after reading the book of a white South African woman about her childhood in the same region as mine but relating a completely different experience. She had maids, her father drove her to school and she played with real toys. I lived in the heart of the country, away from everything and had to walk five miles to go to school. I was born in Natal. My father rented a plot of land from a white owner to do market gardening. Although Indian families tended not to educate daughters, our parents decided that education was a priority for us. Despite financial difficulties, they were able to send us to school. We had to get up at five o'clock in order to catch the school train. In winter, as we were scantily clad, we shivered all the way to the station.

In the mood for love
Situé à Hong Kong, à Singapour et au Cambodge dans les années 1960, In the Mood for Love (2000) de Wong Kar Wai est une ode au sentiment amoureux... qui ne se transforme jamais en véritable histoire d'amour. Ses personnages centraux, M. Chow et Mme Chan, louent des appartements voisins à Hong Kong et découvrent que leurs époux respectifs ont une liaison. Travaillant tous deux avec des collègues aux meurs légères, ils ont du mal à comprendre le comportement de leurs conjoints, mais aussi à maîtriser les sentiments qui naissent peu à peu entre eux. Louée par la presse comme " l'histoire d'amour non consommé la plus consommée du nouveau millénaire", ce film consacré aux désirs réprimés est devenu un classique absolu du vingt-et-unième siècle. Pour établir son analyse pointue et révélatrice de In the Mood for Love, Tony Rayns puise dans sa considérable expertise en matière de cinéma d'Extrême-Orient, d'autant qu'il a été très proche de Wong Kar Wai et de ses collègues de Jet Tone durant la longue et complexe genèse du film. Il établit là un commentaire personnel et extrêmement original sur le film et sa production, bénéficiant de sa connaissance unique des méthodes et des influences caractéristiques de Wong. Cet ouvrage replace également le film dans le contexte de l'euvre générale de Wong, jetant un éclairage particulier sur la place qu'il occupe dans le cinéma de Hong Kong dans son ensemble.

In the Mood for Love
Là où nous croyions reconnaître une remise en cause de la possibilité même de l'amour, on nous parlait d'une grande histoire d'amour. Là où nous étions étreints par le sentiment de l'indétermination et de la pauvreté du monde, on chantait ses splendeurs chatoyantes. Là où nous étions bousculés par une chronologie trouée et fuyante, il fallut que chacun s'accordât à louer le rythme hypnotique et envoûtant du film. Là où nous percevions l'infinie violence des frustrations, de la claustration fantasmatique et des rituels sociaux, on s'émerveillait d'un univers délicat et raffiné. Là, enfin, où de nombreux spectateurs ressentirent une manière de mélancolie voluptueuse et caressante, nous éprouvions certes de la mélancolie, mais une mélancolie poignante et résolument désespérée dont 2046 allait quelques années plus tard déployer le clavier exténué. Il fallait écrire un livre.

The Search for Meaning in the Australian Novel
This thesis grew out of an epistemological interest centered on the search for meaning in literature, and out of a reading of Australian novels. Reaching beyond signification, the creation of meaning in literature refers to the significance a text acquires for the recipient's existence. The potential of this meaningfulness fluctuates between a process of explanation, of uncovering hidden meaning, and deception. Assuming that this range is best demonstrated in the literary treatment of negative experiences in human existence, of pain and suffering, we analyse how Australian novelists and critics set paradigms of meaning against the "Non-Sense" in experienced reality, who and what the agents of meaningfulness in Australian literature are, how they relate to each other and how they affect our reading experience.

Norman Mailer. Neil Leifer. Howard L. Bingham. The Fight
Le 30 octobre 1974, à Kinshasa, au Zaïre, pour ainsi dire le coeur de l'Afrique, deux boxeurs touchent chacun 5 millions de dollars pour s'affronter dans un match épique. D'un côté, Muhammad Ali, qui a juré de reconquérir le titre de champion qu'il a perdu. De l'autre, George Foreman, aussi taciturne qu'Ali est volubile, qui garde en permanence les mains dans les poches "comme un chasseur glisse son fusil dans son étui de velours" . Dans le rôle de l'observateur, Norman Mailer, dont la faculté à saisir les feintes et stratagèmes de cette bataille de titans - et à percevoir son symbolisme plus profond - a fait de son livre, Le Combat du siècle, publié en 1975, un chef-d'oeuvre de la littérature sportive. Que ce soit dans l'analyse des mouvements des boxeurs, dans celle de leur caractère ou dans le fait de considérer la manière dont chacun revendique l'âme des Africains et des Américains, Mailer s'est montré un commentateur d'une énergie, d'une sagacité et d'une audace inégalées - sans aucun doute l'un des seuls assez intrépides pour accompagner Ali lors d'une course nocturne dans le bush. Dans Le Combat du siècle, il redonne à notre conception ternie de l'héroïsme un éclat étincelant et se pose lui-même en champion dans sa catégorie. Plus de quarante ans après la publication du Combat du siècle, cette nouvelle édition abrégée commence par un essai du spécialiste de Mailer, J. Michael Lennon ; elle et illustrée pour la première fois par des clichés majeurs des deux photographes qui surent immortaliser Ali comme personne, sur le ring comme en privé : Neil Leifer et Howard L. Bingham. Unanimement considéré comme le plus grand photographe sportif de sa génération, le vibrant reportage en couleurs de Neil Leifer investit le ring, depuis les premières loges. Accompagné d'images d'autres photojournalistes, de reproductions du manuscrits original de Mailer et de documents visuels témoignant de la frénésie médiatique autour du "combat du siècle" , l'ouvrage livre un hommage intense au champion et un document vivant sur l'un des plus événements le plus épique, le plus unique et le plus rempli d'adrénaline de l'histoire du sport.

The Turkish Boudoir of Marie Antoinette and Joséphine at Fontainebleau
Ten years apart, Marie Antoinette gives to Fontainebleau two jewels made by the greatest artists of her time : the Turkish boudoir (1777) and the silver boudoir (1786). In these homes of retirement, the queen escapes the label of the Court and combines a fancy Orient with the expression of the most extravagant novelties. The craze for turqueries did not fade in the early nineteenth century and the Empress Joséphine moved a few years later in this women's shelter offering a new sparkle to this universe of the Thousand and One Nights. She had a sumptuous and atypical furniture, which combines mahogany and gilded bronzes with lamé fabrics, embroidered and fringed with gold. After a painstaking restoration, the graceful carved, painted and gilded paneling of Marie Antoinette's boudoir is once again the setting for Joséphine's luxurious furniture. Nestled in a corner of the ancestral castle of Fontainebleau, the Turkish boudoir is the only decoration of its kind preserved in France and one of the most exceptional sets of furniture created for Joséphine.

Autobiography: Self Into Form
"The autobiographical impulse" dominated German-language literature of the 1970's, finding its expression in autobiographies of crisis, women's coming-to-consciousness, and disrupted childhoods. This study examines the historical, sociological, political and literary-historical context for this phenomenon, and in so doing engages the critical international discussion of autobiography as a changing genre. Detailed analyses of works by Ingeborg Bachmann, Elisabeth Plessen, Christa Wolf and Peter Handke suggest new critical approaches to autobiographical form. The author provides an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources, as well as a chronological table of autobiographical works of the decade.
