Italian Maiolica and Other Early Modern Ceramics in the Courtauld Gallery
This is the first catalogue of the collection of early modern ceramics in the Courtauld. The pieces in the collection showcase brilliantly the skill of potters and pottery painters working at the time of Raphael and Titian. Maiolica is one of the most revealing expressions of Renaissance art. Its extraordinary range of colours retain the vividness that they had when they left the potter's kiln. Italian potters absorbed techniques and shapes from the Islamic world and incorporated ornament and subject matter from the arts of ancient Rome. This new approach to pottery making, combined with the invention of printing, woodcut and engraving, resulted in an extraordinary type of painted pottery, praised by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists for 'surpassing the ancient with its brilliance of glaze and variety of painting'. The collection boasts a magnificent group of vessels made during the high Renaissance, the golden age of Italian maiolica. It includes precious and delicate Deruta lustreware with imagery deriving from Perugino and Raphael, as well as vessels painted in a narrative style of pottery painting known as istoriato. Highlights include vessels depicting episodes taken from the first printed Bibles of the Renaissance. Istoriato maiolica flourished particularly in the lands of the Dukes of Urbino, who promoted this craft by sending painted pottery to prestigious patrons across Europe. Emblems and devices painted on the pottery help us understand that they were meant to be used and enjoyed by the elites in Renaissance society, such as the Medici and other great Tuscan families. The catalogue will include two recent gifts to the Courtauld, a rare tile of the famous patroness of the arts Marchioness Isabella D'Este, and a refined dish painted with the story of Diana and Actaeon. All major Renaissance pottery centres are represented in the collection, including Siena, Faenza and Venice, as well as splendid examples of the mysterious pharmacy jars made at the foot of the mountain of Gran Sasso in the town of Castelli d'Abruzzo. These achievements of the art of pottery in the early modern period are completed by fine examples of Ottoman pottery, as well as examples of Valencian lustreware. Sani's introductory essay on the Victorian collector Thomas Gambier Parry will shed new light on the development of this fascinating collection, making links between Gambier Parry's artistic practice and his collecting and revealing new insights into his taste as a collector. Each detailed entry uncovers a wealth of new information on the provenance of the pieces.

The Regulation of Rental Contracts in the Housing Market
In many countries (part of) the rental housing market is subject to regulations concerning determination of rent and security of tenure. The author provides fresh theoretical analysis of these measures by taking into account special features of the housing market, like indivisibility, mobility cost and incomplete contracts. The impact a rent ceiling has on contracting, the allocation of the housing stock, rationing cost and on rents in the free housing sector is examined. In some cases tenure laws provide for tenure security and rules for the updating of rent while leaving the initial rent for new leases freely negotiable. The analysis shows that the efficiency of the market could be improved through this type of regulation.

Experiencing Same-Sex Marriage
This book provides an understanding of how the legal and cultural debates and advances and limitations on same-sex marriage are experienced by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) people, same-sex couples, and their social networks. Using data collected from hundreds of GLBT people, same-sex couples, and their social networks over the past decade, the book examines the following topics : same-sex marriages' impact on how GLBT individuals view their relationships and community ; same-sex couples' decision making regarding whether to marry or not ; the interactions between same-sex couples and members of their families-of-origin regarding same-sex marriage ; the same-sex marriage experiences of understudied members of the GLBT community ; and the interactions between same-sex couples and members of their social networks in locations with restrictions against legally recognized same-sex marriage. These findings are examined through the lens of the social scientific study of relationships. They are based on a communication studies perspective on personal relationships, and therefore emphasize communication concepts and theories relevant to the understanding of same-sex marriage experiences.

En substituant aux analyses macroscopiques antérieures une analyse microscopique, Agyune Ndone fait subir à la problématisation de l'ethnie une révolution. Le choix du groupe social pris comme sujet de la démonstration par l'auteur lui donnera sans doute une particulière résonance. Ces Shiwa (selon leur ethnonyme) qu'il désigne par leur "glossonyme" de Makina sont ceux à propos desquels Annie Merlet se demandait en 1990: "Mais où sont donc passés les Ossyéba? Ces guerriers redoutés venus du nord repoussent devant eux puis rejettent Kèlè, Kota, Apinji et Okandé, sur la rive gauche de l'Ogooué... ". Un demi-siècle après cette période de gloire, ils semblaient s'être évaporés au point que Georges Balandier dans Sociologie actuelle de l'Afrique Noire ne les distingue pas des Fang.

La question doit se poser aux Antilles, où le morcellement politique, la complémentarité des économies et les conditions de navigation ont toujours rendu difficile la constitution d'espaces économiques fermés. Dans une aire régionale très active, les navigations à différentes échelles - transatlantiques, hémisphériques, régionales, de voisinage - s'imbriquent au point que la distinction entre licite et illicite paraît insuffisante pour décrire la multiplicité des circulations. Le commerce légal, l'interlope, et la contrebande, sont autant de possibilités complémentaires offertes entre le XVIIe et le XIXe siècle, à l'opportunisme des acteurs maritimes. (re)making collections / la fabrique des collections. Origines, trajectoires et reconnexions
Alors que la "recherche de provenance" concernant les patrimoines extra-occidentaux en Europe est devenue incontournable dans le champ de la recherche muséale (et dans celui des politiques culturelles), les collections du Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale à Tervuren (Belgique) n'ont jamais fait l'objet d'un examen critique dans leur globalité au sein d'un ouvrage scientifique qui leur soit consacré. Si l'histoire de l'institution, de certaines de ses sections scientifiques et/ou collections a bien sûr déjà fait l'objet d'études parfois poussées, ce livre fournit de nouvelles grilles de lecture à l'aune des débats actuels. Construit autour de deux axes - le champ patrimonial dans les contextes belgo-congolais historiques et contemporains ainsi que le cas plus précis des collections (pas uniquement culturelles ni provenant de l'Afrique centrale d'ailleurs) du Musée de Tervuren -, il propose un vaste survol dans une compilation de textes : recherches récentes et inédites mais aussi synthèses actualisées de travaux antérieurs, entretiens et interventions artistiques.
