Alariana, composed in 1985, is in many respects a "typical Mamlok" : The mixed instrumentation of winds and strings in distant registers makes for a transparent sound, the movement is airily polyphonic, and the five aphoristically short movements, together lasting about seven minutes, follow classical movement types in a contrastful alternation of characters. Of particular charm are a passacaglia over ostinato bassoon staccatos in the middle section of the fourth movement and the quiet ending of the fifth movement. Labouring Lives
Labouring Lives unravels the huge changes which have so fundamentally altered the life courses of ordinary women over the past one hundred and fifty years, namely the changes in marriage and fertility patterns. Using dynamic data from Dutch population registers and analytical techniques from the life course approach, the book offers new evidence on women's changing position in the labour market, their role in pre-nuptial sexuality, and their contribution to marriage and fertility change in the Netherlands between 1880 and 1960. The author reconstructs the socio-economic and demographic worlds of different groups of working and non-working women, and by doing so she is able to locate the various groups driving the changes. Advanced statistical tools enable the author to analyse differences in fertility strategies, stopping versus spacing, employed by various social and cultural groups in the Netherlands. This book leads to conclusions which challenge a number of orthodoxies in the field.

Beginning in the 1990s large numbers of women from Mainland China and Southeast Asia married men in Taiwan. They now number over 400,000, warranting some to call them "Taiwan's Fifth Ethnic Group". This book argues that the rise of these marriages is a gendered and relational phenomenon, linked to the forces of globalization. Traditional ideas of marriage, such as the belief that a woman "marries out" of her natal family to be dependent upon her husband and his family, and the idea that a man should "marry down" to a woman of a lesser social and economic status, have not kept pace with changes in women's educational and career opportunities. How these relationships are formed, how they impact gendered understandings of women and men, how families are constituted and relationships developed, and how they affect the children of these families and their education, are the issues explored in this book. Everyday Men
This study is about everyday men. They are approached through a unique marriage of biblical theology and empirical research which gives birth to a missionary challenge. Part One attempts to build a theological foundation for looking at people from the aspect of belief and unbelief. It sees this distinction as a crucial theme in the biblical material which remains relevant to men everywhere. The author discovers five elements of Christian belief in the biblical material while unbelief spans the five elements by its void, denial, or choice of an alternative. Part Two starts with a random sample, in-depth interview of fifty men in a "working-class" area of Birmingham, England. The interviews attempt to discover the nature and saliency of the men's belief and unbelief in the Christian faith. The analysis stresses the qualitative response with the emphasis on listening to the men describe their lives, values, beliefs, and lack of beliefs in their own words. The findings are also compared to other related studies, prompting some conclusions regarding the meaning of these findings. The author attempts to bring the biblical material to bear on the findings about ordinary people and asks whether they can be described as believers or unbelievers. From this starting point, it becomes obvious that the scope of unbelief is very broad. Part Three takes the understanding of God's Word and men's words and moves toward a missiological goal of approaching unbelievers with a gospel for today. It sees both the content and context of the gospel as important. The cultural problem is briefly considered and specific approaches are suggested in relation to the climate of unbelief in "working-class" English culture.

Glasgow Urban Writing and Postmodernism
Alasdair Gray is one of the most innovative and imaginative writers to have appeared on the Scottish literary scene for many years. Gray radically challenges the vision of Glasgow and Scotland as defined by the traditional Glasgow novel. This study first looks back into the past of Glasgow writing to locate some specific novelistic models which Gray echoes in his fiction. The main part of the study then illustrates that Gray's literary attitude of looking beyond Glasgow (or Scotland) is much more helpful in "imagining Glasgow" than to follow the established and trodden paths of Scottish urban writing. In this sense, Gray proves that the narrative techniques characteristic of postmodernist writing are not only helpful in expressing the often quoted Scottish experience of fragmentation, but also in overcoming the artistic stalemate of the Glasgow novel.

Dans le froid et sombre presbytère du petit village de Haworth (Angleterre), il y avait vers le milieu du siècle dernier trois jeunes filles et un garçon privés de mère et tous promis à une existence brève. Comme pour prendre de vitesse l'ange de la mort qui allait les saisir en quelques années, ces enfants doués écrivirent au sortir de l'adolescence quelques chefs-d'œuvre. Dans Agnès Grey (1847), Anne Brontë met en scène des sentiments et un bonheur qu'elle n'a pas eu le temps de vivre. Dans Villette (1852), Charlotte révèle un bonheur qu'elle faillit connaître au prix du scandale. Il revenait à Emily Brontë d'écrire avec Wuthering Heights (1847) un livre ténébreux et orageux (dans lequel on reconnaît, sous le diabolique Heathcliff, leur frère Branwell), le roman de la fatalité et du désespoir, un récit épouvantable et beau que l'on n'attendait pas sous la plume d'une jeune fille de vingt-cinq ans. Un classique de la littérature anglaise en édition collector Elevée au sein d'une famille unie mais pauvre - qui n'est pas sans rappeler la fratrie Brontë -, Agnès Grey, 18 ans, fille d'un pasteur d'un village du nord de l'Angleterre, décide de tenter sa chance dans le monde en se faisant gouvernante. Trop discrète et inexpérimentée, elle est vite confrontée à la dure réalité dès son arrivée chez la famille Bloomfield. Désarmée face à l'indiscipline des enfants gâtés dont elle a la garde, et à l'indifférence cruelle des adultes, elle est renvoyée au bout de quelques mois. Dans l'obligation de subvenir à ses besoins, elle trouve alors un emploi chez les Murray. Les jours passent, avec leur lot de monotonie et de difficultés, jusqu'à l'arrivée du nouveau pasteur, Mr Weston... Chronique réaliste à la première personne, non dénuée de satire, Agnes Grey est largement inspiré de l'expérience de gouvernante d'Anne Brontë dans l'Angleterre provinciale de son siècle.
