Concepts of Mass in Contemporary Physics and Philosophy
The concept of mass is one of the most fundamental notions in physics, comparable in importance only to those of space and time. But in contrast to the latter, which are the subject of innumerable physical and philosophical studies, the concept of mass has been but rarely investigated. Here Max Jammer, a leading philosopher and historian of physics, provides a concise but comprehensive, coherent, and self-contained study of the concept of mass as it is defined, interpreted, and applied in contemporary physics and as it is critically examined in the modern philosophy of science. With its focus on theories proposed after the mid-1950s, the book is the first of its kind, covering the most recent experimental and theoretical investigations into the nature of mass and its role in modern physics, from the realm of elementary particles to the cosmology of galaxies.
The book begins with an analysis of the persistent difficulties of defining inertial mass in a noncircular manner and discusses the related question of whether mass is an observational or a theoretical concept. It then studies the notion of mass in special relativity and the delicate problem of whether the relativistic rest mass is the only legitimate notion of mass and whether it is identical with the classical (Newtonian) mass. This is followed by a critical analysis of the different derivations of the famous mass-energy relationship E = mc2 and its conflicting interpretations. Jammer then devotes a chapter to the distinction between inertial and gravitational mass and to the various versions of the so-called equivalence principle with which Newton initiated his Principia but which also became the starting point of Einstein's general relativity, which supersedes Newtonian physics. The book concludes with a presentation of recently proposed global and local dynamical theories of the origin and nature of mass.
Destined to become a much-consulted reference for philosophers and physicists, this book is also written for the nonprofessional general reader interested in the foundations of physics.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN WORLD HISTORY. An introduction
In modern industrial society, the tic between science and technology seems clear, even inevitable. But historically, as James E. McClellan III and Harold Dorn remind us, the connection was far less apparent. For much of human history, technology depended more on the innovation of skilled artisans than it did on the speculation of scientists. Technology as "applied science," the authors argue, emerged relatively recently, as industry and governments began funding scientific research that would lead directly to new or improved technologies. In Science and Technology in World History, McClellan and Dorn offer an introduction to this changing relationship.
McClellan and Dorn review the historical record beginning with the thinking and tool making of prehistoric humans. Neolithic people, for example, developed metallurgy of a sort, using naturally occurring raw copper, and kept systematic records of the moon's phases. Neolithic craftsmen possessed practical knowledge of the behavior of clay, fire, and other elements of their environment, but though they may have had explanations for the phenomena of their crafts, they toiled without any systematic science of materials or the self-conscious application of theory to practice.
Without neglecting important figures of Western science such as Newton and Einstein, the authors demonstrate the great achievements of non-Western cultures. They remind us that scientific traditions took root in China, India, and Central and South America, as well as in a series of Near Eastern empires, during late antiquity and the Middle Ages, including the vast region that formed the Islamic conquest. From this comparative perspective, the authors explore the emergence of Europe as a scientific and technological power. Continuing their narrative through the Manhattan Project, NASA, and modern medical research, the authors weave the converging histories of science and technology into an integrated, perceptive, and highly readable narrative.

When Cultural Policies Change. Comparing Mexico and Argentina
How can change in cultural Policy be explained ? Through a comparative and historical analysis, this research sheds new light on the emergence, institutionalization and transformation of the cultural policies of two major Latin American countries : Mexico and Argentina. Elodie Bordat-Chauvin's investigation is based on the material gathered in ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2008 and 2010. It gathers observations, unique archive material and more than ninety semi-directive interviews with the majority of Secretaries of Culture in office between 1983 and 2010, several intellectuals, interest groups leaders, cultural managers and members of unions who all played a role in these countries' cultural policies in the last thirty years. This work challenges the common assertions that Mexican cultural policy is characterized by inertia and Argentinean cultural policy by instability. It analyses factors of changes – such as the neo-liberal turn, transnationalization, decentralization and politico-institutional changes – and their consequences – including reductions in cultural budgets, transformations in cultural industries and modifications in the balance of power between national, subnational, public and private actors.

Educational Assistance and School Development in Sierra Leone
The subject of foreign assistance in education for developing countries has gained increasing importance in the last twenty years. The fact that the efforts of both donors and recipients of assistance have not been entirely satisfying has resulted in repeated appeals for intensified scientific investigation into this area. This study represents a response to those appeals from the point of view of an educationist from a recipient country (Sierra Leone).Using historical and field investigations, case studies of three representative agencies were conducted between 1988 and 1989 : a multilateral (UNESCO), a bilateral (British) and a private (Baptist Church).The results indicate that both the approach and goals of aid agencies as well as the degree of involvement of target groups leave a lot to be desired. On the basis of these results, recommendations are made for future cooperation.

Fuseli and the Modern Woman. Fashion, Fantasy, Fetishism
This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition devoted to a fascinating group of drawings by the Anglo-Swiss Henry Fuseli (1741-1825), one of eighteenth-century Europe's most idiosyncratic, original and controversial artists. Best known for his notoriously provocative painting The Nightmare, Fuseli energetically cultivated a reputation for eccentricity, with vividly stylised images of supernatural creatures, muscle-bound heroes, and damsels in distress. While these convinced some viewers of the greatness of his genius, others dismissed him as a charlatan, or as completely mad. Fuseli's contemporaries might have thought him even crazier had they been aware that in private he harboured an obsessive preoccupation with the figure of the modern woman, which he pursued almost exclusively in his drawings. Where one might have expected idealised bodies with the grace and proportions of classical statues, here instead we encounter figures whose anatomies have been shaped by stiff bodices, waistbands, puffed sleeves, and pointed shoes, and whose heads are crowned by coiffures of the most bizarre and complicated sort. Often based on the artist's wife Sophia Rawlins, the women who populate Fuseli's graphic work tend to adopt brazenly aggressive attitudes, either fixing their gaze directly on the viewer or ignoring our presence altogether. Usually they appear on their own, in isolation on the page ; sometimes they are grouped together to form disturbing narratives, erotic fantasies that may be mysterious, vaguely menacing, or overtly transgressive, but where women always play a dominant role. Among the many intriguing questions raised by these works is the extent to which his wife Sophia was actively involved in fashioning her appearance for her own pleasure, as well as for the benefit of her husband. By bringing together more than fifty of these studies (roughly a third of the known total), The Courtauld Gallery will give audiences an unprecedented opportunity to see one of the finest Romantic-period draughtsmen at his most innovative and exciting. Visitors to the show and readers of the lavishly illustrated catalogue will further be invited to consider how Fuseli's drawings of women, as products of the turbulent aftermath of the American and French Revolutions, speak to concerns about gender and sexuality that have never been more relevant than they are today. The exhibition showcases drawings brought together from international collections, including the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand, and from other European and North American institutions.

The twelve lessons forming this volume were originally issued in the shape of monthly lessons, known as "The Advanced Course in Yogi Philosophy and Oriental Occultism" during a period of twelve months beginning with October 1904, and ending September 1905. Les journaux intimes de Charles Baudelaire. Mon coeur mis à nu et Fusées
Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), détache la poésie de la morale et la voue toute entière à la Beauté et non pas à la Vérité. Littérairement il se situe à la croisée entre le symbolisme et le Parnasse, nourri de romantisme, tourné vers le classicisme. A sa mort, Baudelaire laisse un paquet de manuscrits, griffonnés, remplis de notes, anecdotes, pensées ... Poulet-Malassis se voit confier la difficile tâche de trier ces feuillets ; ainsi naissent Mon coeur mis à nu et Fusées, souvent réunis sous le titre de Journaux Intimes, dont l'appellation et la distinction sont souvent mises en péril par les différents biographes de Baudelaire. Ainsi Mon Coeur mis à nu est un enchevêtrement de réflexions annotées par Baudelaire depuis 1859 et jusqu'à sa mort. Le poète joue de la provocation et témoigne avec franchise de ses passions et de ses aversions. Le style et le ton de l'ensemble - direct, brutal, sans équivoque - surprennent le lecteur qui s'y égare. Mais c'est pourtant la mission première d'un journal que de recueillir les coups de sang, les colères et les tristesses de son auteur. Ainsi, dans les pensées intimes du poète, "la femme est naturelle, c'est-à-dire abominable" , "elle est simpliste, comme les animaux" . A propos de George Sand : "Elle est bête, elle est lourde, elle est bavarde" . Puis : " Plus l'homme cultive les arts, moins il b. . de" . Pour celui qui ne connut Baudelaire que par la beauté de ses vers, le choc est rude, d'autant plus que contrairement à ses recueils de poésie il n'y a là aucune continuité, aucune logique. Sans queue ni tête, Mon Coeur mis à nu laisse au lecteur un amer goût d'inachevé.

Nicole Lapierre nous entraîne sur les pas de tous ces intellectuels déplacés qui s'en sont allés, justement, penser ailleurs, sortant des sentiers battus, passant les bornes, enjambant les barrières sociales, sans y être invités ni conviés. Le lecteur découvre, à travers une galerie de portraits, de Georg Simmel à Edward Said, de Walter Benjamin à Paul Gilroy, en passant par Devereux, Deleuze et tant d'autres, un musée imaginaire où les idées prennent vie et chair, où la figure de l'intellectuel est celle de l'étranger, dont l'expérience décalée aiguise les interrogations et stimule la pensée.

Lendemains de défaite. 1870-1871 dans l'imaginaire de la IIIe République
La guerre franco-prussienne de 1870 (la débâcle, l'invasion et le siège de Paris, la capitulation) est, selon les historiens, une guerre oubliée. Elle inspira pourtant une production artistique et littéraire massive, bien vite écartée par les critiques, comme si la France refusait cette mémoire de la défaite. Cent-cinquante ans après, il est temps d'ouvrir le dialogue entre historiens de l'art, de la musique, spécialistes des littératures et des idéologies, sur les échos de cette guerre sous la Troisième République. C'est chose faite avec cet ouvrage tiré d'un colloque organisé à l'université de Cambridge à l'été 2022. Pour certains artistes, il y a un avant et un après 1870-1871. C'est le cas des écrivains qui participent aux rencontres littéraires des "Soirées de Médan", Maupassant et son "Boule de suif" en tête ; c'est le cas aussi de Georges Bizet, qui, dès le lendemain de la guerre, s'engage dans la promotion de la musique française et signe en 1874 une pièce symphonique intitulée "Patrie". C'est le cas enfin de certains peintres militaires qui, se réclamant de la "vérité" , vont à l'encontre des regards officiels portés sur la défaite. Pour d'autres, il faut avant tout tracer des perspectives : George Sand estime ainsi que c'est le paysan, celui qui sème et qui cultive, qui doit être au centre de la reconstruction du pays ; pour d'autres, c'est la reconquête de l'Alsace-Lorraine qui doit être la priorité et la statue représentant la ville de Strasbourg sur la place de la Concorde à Paris prend place dans un imaginaire de la revanche. Même la littérature, dès lors nationale, doit prendre position. Et si Alexandre Dumas devient pour certains, et bien malgré lui (il meurt en décembre 1870), le prophète de la défaite avec la redécouverte de son livre "La Terreur prussienne", paru en 1867, Edmond Rostand met à mal l'héroïsme guerrier et patriotique dans "Cyrano de Bergerac". Au final, cet ouvrage nous permet de porter un regard neuf sur les arts et la littérature après la défaite de 1870-1871.

Aujourd'hui est un grand jour, car le petit Simon, dernier né d'une famille des Porte Malheurs, va devoir livrer son premier ticket-poisse ! Accompagné de Monsieur Georges, le chat noir chargé de superviser sa mission, Simon doit faire annuler le départ en vacances de la famille Chouquette ! Mais cette famille, qui semble tout droit sortie d'un magazine, cache bien des secrets ; aucun des membres de la famille n'est content en réalité de ce départ en vacances, au désespoir de Monsieur Georges qui ne voit pas comment livrer le ticket-poisse dans ces conditions ! Touché par cette situation, le gentil Simon va multiplier les efforts pour que cette famille retrouve l'envie de passer du temps ensemble. Même si cela doit faire capoter sa première mission... Il n'y manque sans doute que la biographie de l'auteur, car non contente d'être une poétesse reconnue et une militante du modernisme, Edith Sitwell construisit sa vie même comme une oeuvre et cultiva résolument un fascinant alibi de rebelle excentrique.
