This book presents a wide variety of approaches to and attitudes towards multiculturalism on the level of language, on the level of education and on the level of policy making. Several of the chapters refer specifically to Australia, since that country has taken the bold step of defining what it understands by the term 'multicultural'. Phenomenological Realism
The phenomenology of Edmund Husserl is being analyzed in regard to its ontological implications. It is demonstrated that Husserl's method of reduction directly leads to an ontological idealism for which there is no epistemological justification. An alternative to this "idealistic" misunderstanding of the phenomenological approach is being developed in applying Heidegger's existential analysis to questions of epistemology and transcendental philosophy. It is thus shown that phenomenology may be established on safer grounds : not on the basis of a pure transcendental subject, but on life-world understood in the realistic sense of transcending the ego.

Henry de Navarre à Nérac. Les marches du trône
Chacun sait les liens qui unissent Nérac et Henry de Navarre. Pourtant, nul n'avait songé à les définir et à en faire un livre. A l'occasion du quadricentenaire de l'accession au trône d'Henry IV, voici comblée cette lacune. Sur la base des registres de la Cour des comptes de Nérac, de l'abondante correspondance d'Henry et des mémoires des contemporains, cet ouvrage offre à un large public un aperçu du rôle de Nérac dans la vie de celui qui se préparait à devenir Henry IV de France. D'abord en faisant un compte précis du temps que ce dernier y a passé entre 1576 et 1587, élevant cette petite cité au rang de pôle européen de politique et de plaisirs... La première partie du livre répond donc à cette question, les liens entre Henry et Nérac résultent-ils d'un mariage de raison, ou d'une longue histoire d'amour entre la ville et les Albret ? " Dis-moi tes comptes, je te dirai qui tu es ". Tel est le titre de la seconde partie du livre. Au travers des dépenses du roi, l'auteur reconstitue la vie fastueuse de la cour de Nérac. Sur la scène, le roi, les princes et leurs maîtresses. Dans la coulisse, tout un monde de valets, cuisiniers, couturiers, musiciens, fauconniers constitue un envers de décor indispensable. Pour un tel train de vie, on devine déjà les recettes. Mais Nérac est aussi centre d'intrigues et terre d'expérimentation de la future politique d'Henry. Elle est au cœur des deux grands problèmes du moment : les guerres de religion, avec la présence du protecteur des protestants bientôt vainqueur de Coutras, et la succession de Valois, dont l'hécatombe ouvre toutes grandes à Henry les MARCHES DU TRONE.

El Harrach chante sa joie, à l'image du violoniste, plein d'entrain : il dit qu'il gratte et non qu'il joue. C'est comme ça qu'il aime à se qualifier. - Je ne gratte pas avant d'avoir reçu quelques pièces répétait-il toujours. Un volontaire comme à l'accoutumée réagit spontanément, collecte l'argent et le pose à ses pieds. C'est le coup de starter. Il gratte, il gratte, et au bout de quelques minutes, rebelote. Il lance à nouveau à l'assistance : - Je ne reprendrais pas tant que le spectacle n'est pas à nouveau agrémenté de quelques pièces. Même topo, on quitte le cercle, on collecte et on pose l'argent à ses pieds. Un stratagème - crédulité aidant - qui lui réussit. C'est de l'arnaque contesta un homme parmi la foule ! C'est du vol. ! Toujours à nous saigner s'écria t-il ! Tu ne résistes pas à l'odeur de l'argent et à la promesse d'en gagner sans le moindre effort. Tricheur ! Sale tricheur ! - Je jure de les défendre, ces braves gens contre l'ennemi que tu es et de te livrer une guerre sans merci. - Des types dans ton genre, j'en connais. Une espèce à faire des bulles en pétant dans une bassine d'eau. - Continue ta route, rien ne te retient espèce de parasite, lui lança t-il tout de go. Je gratte à ceux qui savent apprécier et qui payent pour ça. A El Harrach une journée n'est jamais comme une autre : on aime la foule, le cri des marchands, les gens qui se bousculent poussés par la curiosité en raillant les bonimenteurs, les charlatans, une vie simple et allègre que l'état de pureté des gens rendait encore plus agréable. La vue du spectacle de la rue est un trait de lumière.

Ne neige-t-il pas aussi blanc chaque hiver ?
Il y a longtemps, un amant m'avait écrit : ne neige-t-il pas aussi blanc chaque hiver ? C'était une phrase pour dire la candeur de l'amour ; à présent je l'entends comme la révélation du tout petit peu que nous pouvons comprendre, à notre mesure humaine, de l'éternité. Je ne te reproche pas ta perspicacité, je te reproche de vouloir me voler mon secret. Il y a du vrai et du faux dans ce que tu as cru deviner. Je ne suis pas en train d'écrire une enquête policière sur "l'énigme fascinante du disque de Phaestos" (tu as trop surfé sur les sites nord-américains...), même si ce serait peut-être le meilleur moyen d'éveiller l'intérêt d'un hypothétique éditeur pour le premier et sans doute unique roman d'une inconnue. L'histoire du disque, pour moi, c'est une histoire qui tourne en rond, qui n'a pas de solution, qui ne peut pas en avoir. C'est ainsi que le personnage principal Constance Dargaud évoque son travail d'écriture, en réponse aux questions inquiètes de son ami Gerhard. Plusieurs niveaux fictionnels cohabitent dans ce roman de Silvia Ricci Lempen qui gravite autour d'une écrivaine et de son texte. Pris dans ce va-et-vient entre différents univers, le lecteur se voit propulsé dans les rouages de la création, et suit avec anxiété l'aventure troublante d'une auteure qui s'isole dans un monde imaginaire. Vie et fiction deviennent indissociables, dans cette histoire qui tourne en rond tel un ruban de Moebius. A l'image du cycle des saisons, les signes inscrits sur le disque de Phaestos sont répartis sur une spirale, spirale hypnotique égarant les déchiffreurs.

Transcultural Dictionary of Misunderstandings. European and Chinese Horizons
The Transcultural Dictionary of Misunderstandings. European and Chinese Horizons is the result of an initiative which forges a radically new path for promoting transcultural understanding by studying culture-bound keywords. The stimulating idea is to create and address with intention that which is generally held to be by all means avoided : namely, misunderstandings. The experiment starts with a level of communication that is not political per se but cultural. Cultures have no rigid borders like nation-states. They are more dynamic and meandering, open to influence, and translatable. Like cultures themselves, keywords are saturated with history, long-term experience, values, and collective emotions. They carry a load of tacit knowledge and implicit axioms that have the advantage of not having to be unpacked, explained, or spelled out. Working through various semantic layers of keywords on both sides helps to create a more transparent language for transcultural dialogue. The creation of such a language is the effect of producing, exchanging, and working through misunderstandings on both sides. Within the framework of transcultural dialogue, misunderstandings turn out to be an innovative tool for mutual learning by seeing oneself through the eyes of the other. It is high time for researchers in various parts of the world to join forces and translate basic concepts from one language and culture into another. Every translation is a transformation, marking similarities and differences which can lead to an uncovering of new ideas, values, and cultural practices. This unconventional dialogue is a great source of inspiration because it works through hardened assumptions and misrepresentations, unsettles schematic thinking, and leads to unexpected insights and new points of contact. Everyday Men
This study is about everyday men. They are approached through a unique marriage of biblical theology and empirical research which gives birth to a missionary challenge. Part One attempts to build a theological foundation for looking at people from the aspect of belief and unbelief. It sees this distinction as a crucial theme in the biblical material which remains relevant to men everywhere. The author discovers five elements of Christian belief in the biblical material while unbelief spans the five elements by its void, denial, or choice of an alternative. Part Two starts with a random sample, in-depth interview of fifty men in a "working-class" area of Birmingham, England. The interviews attempt to discover the nature and saliency of the men's belief and unbelief in the Christian faith. The analysis stresses the qualitative response with the emphasis on listening to the men describe their lives, values, beliefs, and lack of beliefs in their own words. The findings are also compared to other related studies, prompting some conclusions regarding the meaning of these findings. The author attempts to bring the biblical material to bear on the findings about ordinary people and asks whether they can be described as believers or unbelievers. From this starting point, it becomes obvious that the scope of unbelief is very broad. Part Three takes the understanding of God's Word and men's words and moves toward a missiological goal of approaching unbelievers with a gospel for today. It sees both the content and context of the gospel as important. The cultural problem is briefly considered and specific approaches are suggested in relation to the climate of unbelief in "working-class" English culture.

Château-d'Oex mille ans d'histoire Suisse
La "nation" suisse a beau exister depuis 1848, date à laquelle une vingtaine de petites républiques s'unissent en un Etat fédératif, l'unité de base de cette confédération demeure la commune. Aux yeux du citoyen helvétique, elle seule incarne sa vraie patrie. Difficile, de ce fait, d'éclairer de l'intérieur l'histoire suisse sans faire usage de ce projecteur que constitue l'histoire locale. L'étude que voici jette son dévolu sur Château-d'Œx et ses deux voisines, Rougemont et Rossinière. Egalement connu sous le nom de Pays-d'Enhaut, ce petit morceau de la haute vallée de la Sarine va traverser les siècles en rencontrant des fortunes diverses. Tour à tour Gruériens, Bernois, Vaudois, catholiques et protestants, ses habitants vont construire leurs églises et leurs écoles, négocier leur bois, leur eau, leur bétail et surtout leur fromage contre florins, louis d'or, batz et francs ; ils vont se faire enrôler dans les armées les plus variées, émigrer en Russie et en Amérique et bâtir des hôtels pour les touristes anglais. En un mot, ils ne vont cesser de s'adapter et de lutter pour survivre. Avec beaucoup de tendresse et juste ce qu'il faut de distance critique, l'historien britannique nous décrit leurs mésaventures et leurs réussites au quotidien comme en politique, esquissant au passage un portrait rafraîchissant de l'histoire helvétique. Attention aux voeux que vous formulez, ils pourraient bien se réaliser. Lily Jacobs a grandi avec un compagnon de jeux un peu particulier : Fazire, le génie dont elle a hérité enfant. Alors quand Nate rencontre la douce et innocente Lily, il sait qu'il ne lui apportera rien de bon. Pourtant il est incapable de lui résister. Malheureusement, Lily n'a pas fait seulement le souhait de rencontrer l'homme parfait.
